World Cup HistoryThe World Cup is the most important tournaments in the world hence its name! Teams from around the world compete for the coveted title of being the best in the world and Spain recently won the latest tournament played out in South Africa.

A total of 204 teams play in many qualifying rounds to reach the final 32 in what is known as the World Cup Finals. Brazil is the most successful team in the world with five wins since the games began in 1930. They continue to take place every four years.

The World Cup lasts for one month and the qualification period will go on for the three years leading up to the World Cup. Around 715 million people watched the World Cup final this year and is it is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event.

The only time that the World Cup has not taken place was during WWII in 1942 and 1946. Germany has won the title three time, Italy four times, Brazil the most impressive at five times, Argentina and Uruguay have won it twice and France, England and Spain have each won it once.

There have so far been 19 World Cup tournaments and they have been won by eight different teams. The latest World Cup was held in South Africa and was won by an impressive Spain while the next one to take place in 2014 will be hosted by Brazil. England are notably attempting to launch a bid to host the WC in 2018.
